DEFINITION
The ability to energize others and inspire a shared vision
WHAT IS IT?
Inspiration is a skill of leaders who envision what can be accomplished and then get their team excited about that goal. Everyone wants to feel like they are contributing to something important. Visionary leaders are able to cast a vision that engages the hearts and minds of other staff and then keep them committed throughout the life of the organization or project.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Without a strong and compelling vision, people can lose interest in their work or disengage from the original mission. Billions of dollars are lost every year because of low productivity and poor employee performance. Similarly, a project or a movement can lose traction when the original envisionaries lose energy and motivation. Many leaders without the ability to unite and inspire their peers live in a constant state of frustration when they see that the team is not living up to its potential.
- Craft a Compelling Vision
First, leaders have to have a clear vision of what can be accomplished. They must be able to envision a concrete goal and believe that it is attainable. Then they have to communicate their passion and belief to the team over and over again. Big, hairy, audacious goals get people’s attention and engage their hearts. - Remind People their Work Matters
Second, leaders have to convince each and every member of their team that what they are doing is important. Members of a group need to feel needed and valued in order to perform at their best. One of the best ways to engage members is to let them know that the team needs them.
Be especially in-tune with those who seem discouraged, and remind each person of how you value their work and of how their contribution connects to the ultimate goal. - Use Stories to Motivate
Successful leaders are oftentimes storytellers at heart. They might tell of the impact of their idea or of an employee going above and beyond the call of duty to serve the team. Even if the story isn’t long, telling a good story often requires forethought and planning. If this doesn’t come naturally to you, write it out and get the details right. Once you are prepared, deliver the message to your team with enthusiasm and passion.
