A commitment to personal growth and healthy practices
What is it?
Personal development takes place over the course of a lifetime. It includes activities that improve self-awareness, develop strengths, increase potential, and better quality of life. Personal development can also include developing other people, for example as their mentor, manager, or coach.
Why is it important?
Personal development is critical, especially for anyone working in a challenging environment. The workplace and workforce are maturing, growing, and advancing, and we must be able to keep up. On a deeper level, all individuals must adapt to changes that occur throughout life, and personal development can bring us closer to reaching self-actualization and full potential.
Suggestions for Improvement
- Overcome Barriers to Learning a New Skill
First, identify what has prevented you from that learning objective that is permanently on your to-do list. Do you feel strapped for time? Are you unsure of where to begin? Think critically about what holds you back. Explicitly articulating where you encounter hurdles is the first step toward overcoming them and acquiring a new skill that will empower you and widen your opportunities. - Practice Healthy Living
Second, exercise and eat well. As a nurse, you know that diet and exercise are linked to productivity, energy, stress levels, and mood. As you adapt your lifestyle to make room for activities that require energy and presence of mind, improvements in physical health can enhance your quality of life and make it easier for you to reach other goals. Incorporating even small amounts of exercise into your daily routine can reduce stress, promote positive mood, and help you reach your potential in other areas. - Strive to Unpack Your Unconscious Mind
Finally, observe how you work on the inside – become conscious of your strengths and weaknesses, emotional triggers, and mental states throughout each day. Identifying habits and patterns will show you more about who you are, help you to change self-limiting beliefs, and provide a foundation for establishing new goals that you are passionate about.
